details of PO decision
It is very disappointing that no changes were made to plans for any of the
Bedfordshire post offices, although the position of the post office in Linslade
is still uncertain - the press release says Postwatch is further reviewing the
proposed closure.
Thank
you for all of the support and information that has been submitted as part of
the Post Office campaign. We will also be working with
relevant organisations on supporting communities
affected by closures through this change.
Background
19 out of Bedfordshire’s 93 post offices were earmarked
for closure as part of Post Office Ltd’s Network Change
Programme.
Post Office Ltd
carried out a consultation on proposed closures in
Bedfordshire between 8 July and 26 August 2008.
Post Offices play a valuable
economic and social role and the closures will be of
considerable concern in local communities. A working group has been set up to coordinate support in
Bedfordshire. Since the process and overall numbers
have been agreed at a national level, there is little that
can be done to reduce the overall number of closures
proposed. However we think that it is important that
decisions are taken in the light of sound information and
local knowledge, and that the criteria for closures are
applied correctly. All
Bedfordshire’s local authorities and BRCC/BRAF worked
together to make information available to communities about
the closure programme.
- Partners have advised Post Office
Ltd of relevant information (e.g. the new growth areas,
areas of deprivation, access issues) with a view to
influencing closure decisions, and the location of
outreach services.
- guidance was prepared on how
to make effective representations about a proposed
closure in your community
- this was backed up by information and maps to
support people in making their case robust.
- Public meetings with Post Office
Ltd and Postwatch were set up. and details will be published
on this site.
-
information has been
submitted, along with copies of letters from local
residents and notes from the public meetings, to the
Post Office Ltd for their consideration.
