Rural Enterprise Fortnight for South
Bedfordshire
South Bedfordshire District Council are inviting rural
businesses in the local area to come along to a host of free
events during Rural Enterprise Fortnight beginning 16 June.
The Scheme has been set up with the District Council,
Business Link, Bedfordshire Rural Affairs Forum and Bedfordshire
County Council. The fortnight is designed to support, promote
and encourage rural businesses throughout South Bedfordshire
following on from a survey performed by the District Council.
The events are not just for businesses that are already
established but also for people who are thinking about setting
up a business and may have questions about the process. So come
along and see if the professionals can help.
Events include a talk from the successful Wilfred Emmanuel
Jones who set up his own hugely popular food label The Black
Farmer. Born in Jamaica, Wilfred moved to the UK with his
parents in the 50s and was raised in Birmingham. Unqualified but
ambitious and persistent Wilfred talked his way into television
and is now credited for bringing many top celebrity chefs,
including Gordon Ramsay, to the small screen. Wilfred
subsequently fulfilled a life long dream by purchasing a small
farm in Devon to create The Black Farmer label.
Business Link are also taking part in the fortnight offering
to ‘buy you a drink’ where an advisor will be able to offer
advice, guidance and further information on a range of business
issues. All you need to do is call into the pub!
There are many more interesting talks and events lined up.
For more information about the fortnight including whether you
will need to book for an event please see the business pages on
the council’s website www.southbeds.gov.uk or ring Donna
Wilkinson, Economic Development Officer on 0845 849 6291.

June: ACRE Rural Life Conference - Community Empowerment
in Action, Keele University, Staffordshire
Empowering communities is central to both policy and
practice. Government policies on community assets, planning and
governance rely on empowered communities, and community-led
parish planning provides a model and decades of experience in
how to empower them. At this influential two-day conference, you
will have the opportunity to discuss how rural communities and
their partners are rising to the challenge of community
empowerment.
